India's semiconductor manufacturing sector is set to receive a significant boost with Intel and 3DGS Inc. USA announcing a planned investment of approximately $3.3 billion. This substantial capital will fund a new semiconductor substrate manufacturing facility in the eastern state of Odisha, marking a crucial step in strengthening the nation's position within the global semiconductor supply chain and expanding its domestic high-tech manufacturing capabilities.
The proposed facility, slated for the Bhubaneswar-Khurda region, is projected to be developed over five to six years. Once operational, it will specialize in producing advanced packaging glass core substrates, high-density interconnect substrates, and other essential technologies for modern semiconductor production. These substrates are fundamental platforms for assembling semiconductor components, making them vital to chip manufacturing.
Global demand for advanced substrate technologies has been on the rise as chipmakers seek solutions for higher performance, greater efficiency, and more sophisticated packaging in next-generation electronics. This project is anticipated to create over 1,800 direct high-skilled jobs, providing opportunities for engineers, researchers, and technicians within the semiconductor ecosystem. The investment is also expected to foster growth in ancillary industries and contribute to a broader technology manufacturing network in the region.
This announcement aligns with the Indian government's strategy to attract semiconductor and electronics manufacturing investments through financial incentives and policy support. New Delhi has previously allocated billions in subsidies to encourage global technology companies to establish manufacturing facilities domestically. The investment underscores growing confidence in India's semiconductor aspirations, as the nation aims to reduce import reliance and become a key hub for advanced technology manufacturing.
By focusing on critical components for chip production, the Odisha facility is poised to enhance India's role in the global semiconductor value chain. Industry experts consider this project a significant milestone in India's pursuit of a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem. It is expected to not only boost domestic manufacturing capabilities but also support India's objective of becoming a major player in the global electronics and semiconductor industry, contributing substantially to the growth of its technology sector in the coming years.
