Type-based Skinfold Thickness Meter segmentation distinguishes analog spring-calibrated calipers, digital pressure-sensing calipers, and ultrasound adipose-depth probes. Analog devices, still favoured for field studies because of zero power draw, represent roughly 32 % of 2023 unit volumes yet only 18 % of value owing to ASPs below USD 45. Digital calipers, incorporating Bluetooth data loggers and self-zeroing load cells, command ASPs of USD 210–280 and delivered 46 % of value sales in 2023 while growing 7 % CAGR; their embedded software raises repeatability from ±1.5 mm to ±0.3 mm, making them the default in academic contract research. Ultrasound probes, although priced USD 1,900–3,200, penetrate neonatal and morbid-obesity clinics where skinfold compression artifacts exceed 5 mm; this niche contributes 6 % of units but 22 % of value and is forecast to outgrow the segment average by 4 pp through 2028.
