Product-type segmentation reveals a bifurcated equipment landscape. Multi-mode plate readers generated 61 % of 2023 global revenue because pharmaceutical CROs consolidate absorbance, luminescence and AlphaScreen into one footprint, saving ~1.2 mยฒ of prime lab space per instrument. Within the subset, monochromator-based multimodes hold 55 % share; they allow spectral scanning for novel fluorophores but sacrifice 20 % sensitivity versus filter-based counterparts, explaining why filter multimodes still capture 45 %. Dedicated fluorescence plate readers, once deemed legacy, retain a resilient 22 % share in GMP quality-control labs where locked optical paths simplify IQ/OQ validation. Handheld/field portable readers (8 %) sell chiefly into Southeast Asian palm-oil mills for aflatoxin M1 testing; although unit volumes surge 18 % YoY, average selling prices sit below USD 6 k, diluting overall market value. Finally, confocal single-cell readers (9 %) embed line-scanning spinning disks, enabling miniaturised 3-D tumour spheroid assays and commanding ASPs above USD 180 k, the only sub-segment defying price erosion in the fluorescence plate reader space.
